The extension arrived two days before the original deadline, which is how these usually arrive. Twenty-one extra days is real relief, and it is also easy to misread — not every taxpayer is covered, and one date did not move at all.
By press release dated 28 September 2026, CBDT extended the AY 2026-27 tax audit report deadline from 30 September to 21 October 2026, and the income tax return deadline for covered audit cases from 31 October to 21 November 2026. Transfer pricing cases under Section 92E remain on 30 November, with a specified date of 31 October.

Quick Summary — The Dates Now
| Compliance | Original | Extended |
| Tax audit report, Form 3CA/3CB with 3CD | 30 September 2026 | 21 October 2026 |
| ITR for covered audit cases | 31 October 2026 | 21 November 2026 |
| ITR where Section 92E applies | 30 November 2026 | Unchanged |
| Specified date for 92E cases | 31 October 2026 | Unchanged |
| Non-audit business and professional ITR | 31 August 2026 | Already passed |
💡 TaxKitab Tip: The extension moves the deadline. It does not move the interest clock. Section 234A interest runs on self-assessment tax from the original due date unless CBDT separately waives it, and no such waiver has been announced. So a business sitting on a tax liability gains filing time and keeps accruing interest on the unpaid amount. If you expect to pay tax, pay it on the original timeline and use the extra twenty-one days for the report, not for the money. — The TDS reconciliation Form 3CD asks for is walked through in our TDS & TCS Complete Guide (Rs 249)
What Moved and What Did Not
Two dates moved. The audit report in Form 3CA or 3CB with Form 3CD now goes in by 21 October 2026. The income tax return for taxpayers in the covered audit category now goes in by 21 November 2026.
The sequence is unchanged and still matters. The audit report is furnished first, the return follows. The specified date for the audit report now sits one month before the extended return date, which is the structure the law expects.
Transfer pricing did not move. Where Section 92E applies, the return remains due on 30 November 2026 and the specified date for the report remains 31 October. If you are in that category, this announcement changes nothing for you.
Who Is Covered
The extension applies to taxpayers in the specified audit category — broadly, those whose accounts require audit under the Income-tax Act and who would otherwise have filed by 31 October.
It does not extend every deadline for every taxpayer. The non-audit business and professional return date for AY 2026-27 was 31 August 2026 and has already passed. Salaried individuals and others outside the audit category are not affected by this announcement at all.
Work out which category you are in before relying on 21 November. The penalty for assuming wrongly is considerably larger than the benefit of the extension.
Interest Is the Part People Miss
An extension of the filing date is not an extension of the payment date.
Interest under Section 234A continues to run on unpaid self-assessment tax from the original due date unless CBDT issues a separate waiver. None has been announced alongside this extension.
Interest under Sections 234B and 234C on advance tax shortfalls is unaffected either way — those run on their own schedule and were never tied to the filing date.
The practical consequence is simple. If you owe tax, paying it now and filing later costs nothing extra. Waiting until 21 November to do both costs interest on the whole period.
What the Extra Three Weeks Are Actually For
Not for starting the audit. For finishing the reconciliations that a tax audit depends on and that businesses routinely leave incomplete.
GST turnover reconciled against books, because the Form 3CD requires it and a mismatch is the most common query raised. TDS deducted reconciled against what was deposited and reported, and against Form 26AS. Related-party transactions identified and documented. Loans and deposits checked against the reporting requirements in the form. Stock and creditor confirmations obtained where the auditor has asked for them.
A business that hands these over complete turns a three-week audit into a one-week audit. One that does not has simply moved the same crunch three weeks later. Where the books themselves are behind, that is the constraint rather than the audit, and catch-up work has to come first.
If the Audit Is Not Started Yet
Start with the reconciliations above rather than with the audit itself, because the auditor cannot progress without them.
Agree with your auditor what they need and by when, working back from 21 October rather than forward from today. Where books are not current, catch-up has to happen first and that is the constraint, not the audit.
And resist treating 21 November as the operative date. The return cannot be filed before the report is furnished, so the real deadline for most of the work is 21 October.
