Filing an Audit-Case ITR by 21 November: What to Check First

Checklist before filing an audit-case income tax return by 21 November

With the audit report due 21 October and the return 21 November, there is a month between them. Most of that month gets spent waiting, and then the return is prepared in the last week from figures nobody re-checked against what was actually filed in the 3CD.

The return has to agree with the audit report. Where the 3CD reports one figure and the return another, the mismatch is visible to the department immediately and is one of the most common triggers for a notice. The month between the two dates exists to make them agree.

💡 TaxKitab Tip Reconcile the return to Form 26AS and AIS before filing, not after the notice. Credit claimed in the return that does not appear in 26AS is simply not allowed, and the first you hear of it is an intimation reducing your refund or raising a demand. Where a deductor has not filed or filed with a default, the credit will not be there however legitimate the deduction was — and chasing them after you have filed is considerably harder than chasing them now. — The deductor-side version of this problem is covered in our TDS & TCS Complete Guide (Rs 249)

The Dates, Briefly

For AY 2026-27, CBDT extended the audit report deadline to 21 October 2026 and the return for covered audit cases to 21 November 2026.

Where Section 92E applies, the return remains due 30 November with a specified date of 31 October — that category was not part of the extension. Confirm which applies to you before working to either date; the detail is in our post on the extension itself.

The report is furnished first and the return follows. That order has not changed.

Turnover Has to Agree Three Ways

Books, 3CD and GST returns should all say the same thing, and where they do not, you need an explanation rather than a reconciliation done afterwards.

Common legitimate differences: supplies reported in GST that are not revenue under accounting standards, Schedule I transactions without consideration, cutoff items sitting in one year in books and another in the return, and credit notes treated differently in each.

Each of these is defensible. What is not defensible is three different figures and nobody able to say why.

Disallowances Already Stated in the 3CD

The audit report sets out disallowances clause by clause. The return has to reflect them.

The ones most often missed: payments to MSME vendors beyond the permitted period under Section 43B(h), statutory dues not paid by the due date, expenses where TDS was not deducted or not deposited, and cash payments above the threshold.

If the 3CD states a disallowance and the return does not apply it, the inconsistency is on the face of the filing.

TDS Credit, Advance Tax and Challans

Claim only what appears in Form 26AS. Credit that is not reflected there will not be allowed, whatever the certificate in your file says.

Where it is missing, the deductor has either not filed or filed with a default, and it needs chasing before you file rather than after.

Check advance tax and self-assessment challans against 26AS too. A challan quoted with the wrong assessment year or the wrong head is a common cause of a demand on an otherwise correct return.

Interest, Which the Extension Did Not Move

The filing date moved. Interest under Section 234A on unpaid self-assessment tax runs from the original due date unless a separate waiver is announced, and none has been.

So if tax is payable, paying it now and filing later costs nothing extra. Waiting until 21 November to do both accrues interest across the whole period.

Interest under 234B and 234C on advance tax shortfalls runs on its own schedule and is unaffected either way.

Before You Submit

Confirm the audit report acknowledgement details are correctly entered in the return. Check the depreciation schedule agrees with the 3CD. Confirm the balance sheet and profit and loss in the return match the audited financials exactly. And verify the return — a return filed but not verified is not filed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ITR due date for audit cases this year? 21 November 2026 for AY 2026-27, extended from 31 October by CBDT.

Does the extension cover transfer pricing cases? No. Where Section 92E applies, the return remains due 30 November with a specified date of 31 October.

Can I file the return before the audit report? No. The report is furnished first and the return follows.

Is interest waived because of the extension? No. Section 234A interest on unpaid self-assessment tax runs from the original due date.

My TDS credit is not showing in 26AS. The deductor has not filed, or filed with a default. Chase them before filing — credit not in 26AS will not be allowed.

What if the return and the 3CD disagree? Fix it before filing. A mismatch between the two is visible immediately and is among the most common notice triggers.

What happens if I miss 21 November? A belated return is possible with a late fee and interest, and certain losses can no longer be carried forward. File on time where at all possible.
