India or the Philippines: Where to Offshore Your Accounting

India or the Philippines for offshore accounting — TaxKitab

two countries, including this one. We are an Indian firm. Read what follows knowing that, and weigh the parts where we argue against ourselves more heavily than the parts where we do not.

The Philippines generally suits high-volume transactional bookkeeping with heavy US-hours coverage and close cultural alignment to US business practice. India generally suits work that needs qualified accountants — review, year-end preparation, management reporting, anything requiring professional judgment. The cost gap between them is smaller than most comparisons claim, and it is rarely the deciding factor.

Weighing the two for your own firm? WhatsApp us what the work actually consists of and we will tell you honestly which fits.

💡 TaxKitab Tip Decide by the work, not the country. Write down what the role actually does for a week — how many hours are data entry and reconciliation, how many are judgment calls, and how many need someone awake while your office is. If it is 80% processing with US-hours coverage, the Philippines has a genuine structural edge and we will say so. If a qualified accountant has to look at it before it goes to you, India’s pool is deeper. Most firms discover the split is not what they assumed.

Where the Philippines Is Genuinely Stronger

Three things, and they are real rather than marketing.

US-hours coverage is normal, not an exception. The Philippines has a thirty-year BPO industry built around US night-shift working. Staffing a US-hours role there is routine and sustainable. In India it is done, and done well, but it is a deliberate arrangement rather than the default, and it narrows the hiring pool.

US GAAP and US payroll concepts sit closer to the surface. Filipino CPA training covers US GAAP as part of the curriculum. In India the training is on Indian standards, so US-specific concepts — 1099s, W-2s, quarterly estimates, state-level filings — are learned on the job. A competent Indian provider trains for this, but it is training rather than prior knowledge.

Cultural proximity to US business practice. Decades of US-facing service work produce a communication style that American firms find familiar.

If your work is high-volume AP/AR, categorisation, and daily reconciliation, with someone needed online during US business hours, the Philippines has the structural advantage.

Where India Is Genuinely Stronger

Depth of qualified accountants. India has roughly 4.23 lakh active chartered accountants, with tens of thousands qualifying each year. Where the work needs someone who can form a view — is this capitalised or expensed, does this provision look right, why has gross margin moved — that depth matters, and it is the reason a lot of review-layer work sits in India.

Judgment work rather than processing. Year-end preparation, management reporting, consolidation, analytical review — work where the deliverable is a conclusion rather than a cleared queue.

UK and UAE hours without a night shift. India sits 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of the UK and 1.5 ahead of the UAE, so a UK firm gets most of its working day overlapped from a normal Indian one. A real operational difference that rarely appears in US-written comparisons.

IFRS and multi-jurisdiction work. Indian training is IFRS-adjacent, which travels better to UK, EU and UAE reporting than to US GAAP.

Where Both Sides Overstate

Cost. Published ranges overlap almost entirely — commonly $1,800 to $5,000 a month for a full-time equivalent, varying far more by seniority and whether review is included than by country. A large quoted country gap means two different roles are being compared; the market picture is in what outsourced bookkeeping actually costs.

Attrition. Both markets have it in major cities. Providers quote the other country’s figure and omit their own. The question to ask any provider is not the country rate but theirs: what was your attrition on client-facing roles last year, and what happens to my file when someone leaves.

Security certifications. SOC 2 and ISO 27001 are provider-level, not country-level. A certified Indian provider and a certified Philippine provider are in the same position; an uncertified one in either country is not. Ask for the report, not the logo. The underlying framework is set out in data security when outsourcing accounting to India.

English. Both markets work in English professionally. Accent is not a proxy for comprehension, and for accounting work the thing that matters is whether the person understands what the number means.

The Question That Actually Decides It

Not the country. Who reviews the work, and what are they qualified to review?

A provider in either country can hire capable processors. What separates engagements that work from those that do not is whether there is a qualified reviewer between the processor and you, what that review consists of, and whether it is evidenced. The buyer’s checklist for UK firms sets out how to test that, and the same questions apply to a US firm.

A second question worth asking: what happens in month three, when the novelty has gone and the original account manager has moved on. That is usually when the difference between a staffing arrangement and a service shows up, and the pattern is described in the first 30 days of an offshore engagement.

What We Would Say If You Asked Us Directly

If your requirement is a high-volume bookkeeping queue with someone present through the US day and no judgment layer, we would tell you the Philippines is a reasonable choice and we would not pretend otherwise.

If the work needs preparation to a standard a qualified person has signed off, or you are a UK or UAE business where the time zone works in your favour, or you want books and the India-side compliance handled by the same team, that is what we do — the model is set out in outsourcing bookkeeping to India for CPA firms and in why growing businesses outsource accounting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one country clearly cheaper? No. Published ranges overlap heavily and the variation within each country, by seniority and scope, is larger than the variation between them. Treat a large quoted country gap as a sign that two different roles are being compared.

Can an Indian team work US hours? Yes, and many do. It is a deliberate shift arrangement rather than the market default, so ask how long the current team has been on that shift and what the turnover has been.

Does the Philippines handle UK work? It can, but the time zone works against it — a UK firm gets far less working-day overlap than from India. If your work needs same-day back-and-forth, that is a real cost.

Should I split work across both countries? Some larger firms do, with processing in one and review in the other. For a firm below a few hundred clients it usually adds coordination cost without a matching benefit.

What about Latin America or Eastern Europe? Both are growing for US and EU work respectively, mainly on time zone. The qualified-accountant depth is smaller than either India or the Philippines, and costs sit higher.

You are an Indian firm. Why should we trust this? You should not, entirely. What you can do is test the parts we argued against ourselves — the Philippines’ US-hours and US GAAP advantages are real and checkable — and then judge the rest.
